Children’s Book Printing: Safety Standards, Paper Types & Design Tips

Printing children’s books comes with unique responsibilities. Beyond beautiful illustrations and engaging stories, every children’s book must meet strict safety standards — especially for the youngest readers who explore books with their mouths as much as their hands.

Safety Standards: Non-Negotiable

Key Certifications

Standard Region Requirements
EN71-3 Europe Migration of heavy metals from inks/coatings
ASTM F963 USA Mechanical and chemical safety
CPSIA USA Lead content < 90ppm in accessible parts
ISO 8124 International Generic toy/book safety standard

At QiPrinting, all our children’s book inks are certified non-toxic and compliant with EN71 and ASTM F963. We provide compliance documentation with every order.

What Makes a Book “Child-Safe”?

  • Non-toxic inks (soy-based, heavy-metal-free)
  • Rounded corners (no sharp edges for toddlers)
  • Water-based lamination (no solvent residue)
  • Sturdy binding (pages can’t be torn out and swallowed)

Board Book vs Hardcover vs Paperback

Board Books (Ages 0-3)

  • 12-24 pages, each page is 1-2mm thick pressed board
  • Rounded corners mandatory
  • Common sizes: 5×5″, 6×6″, 7×7″
  • Perfect for: baby books, first words, touch-and-feel

Hardcover Picture Books (Ages 3-8)

  • 32-48 pages, standard picture book format
  • 8.5×11″ or 8×10″ are industry standards
  • Gloss or matte lamination on cover
  • Perfect for: storybooks, illustrated books, educational

Paperback Children’s Books (Ages 6+)

  • More economical for older children
  • Chapter books and middle-grade fiction
  • Lighter weight for shipping

Paper Types for Children’s Books

Paper Best For GSM Range
Coated art paper Full-color illustrations 128-200gsm
Matte art paper Subtle illustrations, less glare 128-157gsm
Uncoated offset Activity books, coloring books 100-140gsm
Grey board Board books 800-1200gsm per page

Design Tips for Children’s Books

  • Bleed is crucial: Full-bleed illustrations are the norm — provide 5mm bleed on all sides
  • CMYK, not RGB: Your screen uses RGB; your printer uses CMYK. Convert before exporting.
  • Safe zone: Keep text and important elements at least 5mm from the trim edge
  • Gatefold & die-cut: Special effects are possible! Just discuss with your printer early
  • No tiny text: Children’s books need larger fonts — 14pt minimum for early readers

Special Finishes for Children’s Books

  • Spot UV: Glossy highlights on specific illustration elements
  • Foil stamping: Metallic accents on cover artwork
  • Die-cutting: Custom-shaped pages (windows, peek-a-boos)
  • Touch-and-feel: Embedded textures (fuzzy patches, rough surfaces)
